Scope and Content West front of St Andrews Cathedral, Fife The building of the present cathedral began in 1160 and it was finally consecrated in 1318. A fire destroyed most of it in the second half of the 14th century. It was repaired by 1440, but was allowed to fall into disrepair after the Reformation of 1560. The original west front was reconstructed after a fire in 1378 but it remains of late 13th-century appearance. The octagonal stair-tower is topped by a belfry with gabled openings and a small stone spire. The wall (left) is the south wall of the nave. St Andrews Cathedral-priory was an Augustinian foundation, the original community being brought to the church of St Rule, or Regulus, around 1127. From 1472 the bishops of St Andrews became archbishops with authority over other dioceses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
